RAD is a program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques. It is a comprehensive self-defense course for women that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defensive training. Our instructors are nationally certified R.A.D. Systems instructors. These SUNY Buffalo State Police Officers bring years of law enforcement and self-defense experience that will enhance this training
NOTE: This is a 5-session, 10-hour Winterim presentation. Attendees MUST attend all five 2-hour sessions. Make sure you wear comfortable clothing and bring a water bottle with you.

Officer Raven Harvey is a member of the NYS University Police at Buffalo State. She is a police defensive tactics instructor as well as a R.A.D. Instructor. She has been the lead RAD instructor for Buffalo State for several years. She along with Byron Danis, Scott Richards and Rick Myers make up the Buffalo State R.A.D. instruction team.

There is a lot that CERT members can do to assist professional responders during a disaster, but some of the most exciting and challenging work has to do with disaster medical operations, where time is critical and every second counts. You will learn:

Robert J. was heavily involved in CERT through his positions as newly retired Emergency Management Coordinator for the Town of Lancaster and Public Information Officer. He has been a fire fighter for over 50 years, holding several officer positions including Chief.
Wayne has been a fire fighter and EMT for 28 years and is currently Lieutenant. He is a CPR/First Aid instructor for the County and private instruction.
Both instructors have logged thousands of volunteer hours with the Bowmansville Vol Fire Assn and elsewhere, and have taken numerous courses in firefighting and first aid.

This workshop will run through some of the basic principles of preservation and how they can be applied to personal collections you may have at home. The first half of the course will focus on physical media, with a particular emphasis on paper and photograph care. Also highlighted will be an overview of audio/visual media including film, video and audio tape preservation. The second half of the course will be devoted to digitization and the digital preservation of documents, photographs, emails and websites. With this workshop, I will show you the principles of preservation used within archives to help save and preserve your personal archives.

Jeremy is Processing Archivist in Butler Library at SUNY Buffalo State. He holds a Masters in Library Science degree from Indiana University and is a Certified Archivist by the Academy of Certified Archivists. He has experience working in a variety of archives in corporate, academic, and museum settings. Originally from Las Vegas, Nevada, Jeremy moved to Buffalo in 2013.

Wednesday, January 7, 2015 - 9:00 - 11:00 AM - Butler Library 210
This lecture will look at how local Indigenous people have historically used plants for both food and medicine and the deep cultural connection that the Onödowa’ga:’ (Seneca) continue to have with natural world. The talk will be followed by a demonstration on how you can employ these ancient herbal crafts in modern times.
Presenter: Mary Jo Graham
Mary Jo is founder and director of Oakmoss Education, working to bring people and nature into harmony through workshops, lectures and field outings. Additionally, she works as a Naturalist for a number of well-respected environmental education organizations, developing programs and teaching at schools and to the general public. Ms. Graham is also an Assistant Professor in the Physics Department at Erie Community College teaching Environmental Science and Field Ecology. Mary Jo graduated Summa Cum-laude from the University at Buffalo with a degree in Environmental Studies focusing on Environmental Education and Native American culture. She currently is completing her Master's project at SUNY Buffalo State.

In this class, you will learn all about Paleo/ Primal/ Gluten free baking using nut flours, coconut flours, seeds, flax, and different starches. Learn how to heal your body through diet.
There is a $5.00 charge to cover the cost of the supplies.
Be sure to bring containers to take home your samples.
Presenter: Shannon Casterline
Shannon has worked in the Biology department for 14 years. She has a Bachelor of Technology degree in Plant Science from SUNY Cobleskill. Shannon was diagnosed with Celiac disease a few years ago and follows a paleo/primal diet in order to control her symptoms. She has always loved baking and taught herself a new way to bake following her diagnosis.
